Kathy McCabeDream of Italy host and executive producer Kathy McCabe believes Italy can change your life – whether you travel there, move there or just live like an Italian at home. That is the premise of her pledge event/special Dream of Italy: Travel, Transform and Thrive, which explores the 11 essential elements of the Italian lifestyle through the stories of full and part time expats like Sting & Trudie Styler, Francis Ford Coppola, Under the Tuscan Sun author Frances Mayes, best-selling financial author David Bach, retiree Sally Carrocino and interior designer Arlene Antoniette Gibbs.
McCabe began hosting the hit Public Television travel series Dream of Italy in 2015. Two seasons and the Dream of Italy: Tuscan Sun Special with Frances Mayes continue to air on PBS stations, Create TV and PBS.org giving these series 96% U.S. TV Household Coverage. The most popular episode in terms of viewer feedback is the Castelvetere sul Calore episode from season 2 where McCabe brings her (now late) parents back to her mother’s ancestral hometown to explore the mysteries of her ancestry and the miracles of the town’s Madonna.
It was the first trip she took to Castelvetere sul Calore 26 years ago to fulfill her grandfather’s dream of finding the town that then gave birth to Dream of Italy, the award-winning travel magazine and membership website that she founded in 2002. Nearly 180 issues cover every corner of Italy detailing where to go, who to meet, what to see, where to stay and what to eat. Dream of Italy served as the inspiration for the Public Television series. McCabe is also the host of the Dream of Italy Podcast which was lauded by The New York Times as one of “13 Podcasts for Wandering Souls.”
McCabe’s Italy and travel expertise have been featured in The New York Times, USA TODAY, ABC News, Forbes, BusinessWeek, The Washington Post, The New York Post, Delta Sky Magazine, The London Sunday Times, The Telegraph (UK) and many other media outlets.
McCabe began her career in journalism at ABC News where she was part of an Emmy-Award winning investigative team linking money and politics during the 1996 presidential election. She holds a M.A. in non-fiction writing from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S.F.S. in European Studies from Georgetown University. McCabe is a graduate of the Stanford University Publishing Program for Mid-Career Professionals. Her other great passion in life, besides Italy, is dogs, particularly her beloved breed, wire fox terriers (she meets two in the Venice episode!)
