Real Rail Adventures host Jeff Wilson is a lifelong traveler and an avid train buff. He delights in investigating grand historic stations and whistle-stops, and drinking in the sights as the world speeds by the train window.

With more than 25 years of home building and remodeling experience, Wilson jokes that he studied classical piano in college, receiving a music degree, because "it looked good on a resume." In reality, that music degree kept him hard at work in the construction industry, making a living.

Until his career in television began. As a narrator, host, and actor, he has appeared in nearly 200 hundred episodes on HGTV (Restore America Series, Restore America Honors, International Housewares Show Specials) and the diy Network (Blueprint for Homebuilding, Handmade Music, Build-a-Deck, Build-a-Fence, Flooring: Wall-to-Wall, Outdoor Zone) as well as many hundreds of commercials, corporate films, features, and made-for-TV movies. He’s also worked extensively with (now on their “Best Practices” video series and is currently the host of the HGTV Dream Home, HGTV Green Home, and diy Network Blog Cabin Video series.

Wilson is also the author of The Greened House Effect (, which follows his family’s Deep Energy Retrofit of their 1940s Cape Cod-style kit home to reduce their energy use by 85%. In the book, Wilson weaves a readable narrative, offering solutions to some of the world’s most pressing energy problems at a hammer-and-nail level.

His personal interests are his obsessions: carpentry, literature, tap dancing, canning, horses, country French cuisine, backpacking, auto mechanics, gardening, physics, solar energy, European bread baking, thrift store shopping, and the poetry of Wendell Berry. Jeff, his wife, and two daughters live in a perpetually half-renovated home in a small college town in Ohio.
